OJUKHEON in Gangneung

The figures depicted on the 5,000 and 50,000 won notes are Yi I(Yulgok) and Shin Saimdang, who are mother and son! And their birthplace, where these two lived, is a place called Ojukheon in Gangneung.

Yi I was a scholar and a great thinker in the middle of the Joseon Dynasty, and his ideas and achievements had a significant impact on Korean history and culture.

Shin Saimdang, who raised such a wonderful son, is a representative mother of Korea and a leading figure in emphasizing women’s education in Korea. The house drawn behind Yi I on the 5,000 won note is Ojukheon.
